Biography
Sarah Hauser was born in San Francisco, and has lived in New York for the past twenty-five years. She studied drawing at the Art Students League and Spring Studio; sumi-e painting with Sensei Koho Yamamoto at Koho School of Sumi-e; and drawing, painting, printmaking and papermaking at Cooper Union, Manhattan Graphics, the Lower East Side Printshop and Dieu Donne Papermill. Her exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad have included Woodward Gallery (NYC), Barrett House, Noho Gallery (NYC), Pen and Brush Gallery (NYC), Purdue University, Woman Made Gallery, Hiram Blauvelt Museum, International Print Center of New York, Target Gallery at Torpedo Factory Art Center, Washington Printmakers Gallery, Dean Lesher Regional Center for the Arts (California), Nommo Gallery in Kampala, and KIWA Exhibition and Tour in Japan. Her work has been published in CALYX, Simple Printmaking and Japanese Woodblock Printing, and she received the Silver Award in a recent competition held by Dialogue Magazine. She is a keyholder member at the Lower East Side Printshop in New York City.
As animals are a subject very close to her heart, Sarah has donated work to such groups as Delta Society, PAWS/LA, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, the Primate Conservation and Welfare Society, Treehouse Animal Foundation, Texas Snow Monkey Sanctuary and Jane Goodall. She has steadily built a body of work, evolving from drawing and painting to monoprints, linocuts, woodblock prints, etchings and sculpture. She has studied the Japanese method of woodblock printmaking with Jonathan and Miwako Glick, Kathy Caraccio, April Vollmer and Yasu Shibata. She has also studied solarplate etching with Dan Welden. This past year she created a limited edition of solarplate etchings for the Gorilla Foundation.
Sarah has taught papermaking and other art projects to public school children through Dieu Donne Papermill and Arts Connection, and has demonstrated and assisted teaching Japanese woodblock printing at the Japan Society and at the annual "Sakura Matsuri," or Cherry Blossom Festival, in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Sarah had a solo exhibition in 2001 at Woman Made Gallery in Chicago. In 2002 she painted a dog for "Art Unleashed", a public art project of 50 fiberglass dogs which were installed in Haverford, PA. She had a solo show in October 2002 at John Jay Gallery in New York City. In 2003 she received the Medal of Honor & Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation Award for Printmaking at the annual exhibition of the National Association of Women Artists. She is a member of the Metro New York Chapter of the Sumi-e Society of America, with whom she has participated in numerous exhibitions. Sarah is represented by Woodward Gallery in New York City.
Statement
"Drawing is the foundation upon which I build my work. The spontaneity of line, ink strokes and smudges quickly captures the feeling and energy of my subjects. My work also involves the labor-intensive process of printmaking. The immediacy of drawing and the protracted process of printmaking work together to form a dynamic within which I develop extended series.
An important aspect of my work reflects a very direct connection I feel with animals. I am inspired by their emotional transparency and their fascination with any new object or situation: the squirrel who comes to our fire escape every day to taunt our cat; the tiny sparrow who steals the large chunk of bread in mid-air as it's being thrown to a duck; the dogs that are so delighted to be out on a walk.
Over the past seven years I have developed a series of prints of animals. Many of these have been created using a technique based on traditional Japanese printmaking, or 'hanga,' incorporating Japanese carving and printing tools and techniques with my own imagery and a few modern variations. My challenge has been to maintain the lightness and looseness of my drawing line within the heavily technical aspect of this method. At times I have stretched the boundaries of this medium by hand-printing in a very large format (up to around 30" x 40", whereas most traditional Japanese prints are no larger than 11" x 15"), still working in a very loose, sketchlike style. Some of these prints are made by enlarging images from very small sumi-e paintings to create a large outline block, then hand-painting the shading with sumi ink and large brushes. I also developed a series of large images of animals floating on Byzantine patterns, which are made using a printing technique called 'frottage.' Paper is placed over the carved woodblocks and rubbed with pigment sticks and graphite, creating a very textured effect in combination with the translucent handmade Japanese paper that I use. In 2001 I started working on a series of solarplate etchings based on mixed media drawings of dogs in a progression of states of consciousness.
In 2002 I began a series of drawings and prints of toys on adventure. These are a natural extension of the animal series, taken into an imaginary world. I have always been fascinated with small, old, unusual toys. I collect them and set them up in ever-evolving miniature landscapes inside glass cases. Recently I began to draw them. As I experimented with various combinations and juxtapositions of these toys, they began to evoke still lifes and scenarios.
In 2003, during the development of several ongoing animal series, I began swapping body parts. Each successive morphological juxtaposition added momentum to this new series of hybrid animals. Drawing reference from natural history illustration, I am constructing an imaginary animal world which is comprised of drawings, prints and sculpture."
